According Dries Buytaert at the recently held DrupalCon in San Francisco, nearly one percent of the world's websites now uses Drupal PHP-based CMS. Drupal users now also include the high profile White House official website, whitehouse.gov.
Dries Buytaert created Drupal in 2001 as an online message board. He then founded a company named Acquia, for providing service and support in Drupal CMS. The IT giant Microsoft now supports Drupal and announced the release of SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0 to assist Drupal developers. Drupal experienced a phenomenal growth in its users. As per the recent estimate in January 2010, there are almost 300,000 websites which have been powered by Drupal CMS. The project claims to have over 8,000 contributors. The increase in Drupal update requests, worldwide shows its popularity among enterprises and businesses.
