Big Brands Bag the Best Through Mobile Commerce, Smaller Businesses Follow Closely

Big retail brands such as Amazon, Starbucks, and Pizza Hut are using mobile apps to boost their sales. Starbucks for example has a mobile app that allows customers to check their SBUX card balance, replenish it, and make payments through their phones. They also have an app that locates the nearest open Starbucks and allows users to browse the menu. Chief Information Officer of Starbucks, Stephen Gillet says, "We have seen a very, very, high interest from our customers". He also said that the store location app received more than 500,000 downloads in their first week.

BestBuy.com had 6.5 million users accessing their services through their mobile phones at the end of fiscal year 2009. Thompson reports that their estimate for fiscal 2010 is 17 million mobile users. It's not just the big brands that are profiting from mCommerce, even the likes of King Arthur Flour, a cataloger of baking products have experienced a positive change and sales growth. The director of online services at King Arthur Flour says that they are definitely getting serious about the mobile platform as a sales channel because the last year saw their mobile traffic quadruple.
