Steve Jobs' keynote at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco -showcasing the newest technologies and latest innovations the in iOS and Mac OS X - has now concluded.
Apple previewed the next major version of the Mac operating system, a mobile OS update, and a cloud-based service for syncing and backing up documents, photos, contacts, calendars, email and music.Here's an easy-to-digest summary of the salient points:
Mac OS X Lion
- Mac users - More than 54 million globally
- Mac has grown 28%, while PC growth has shrunk 1% year-over-year
- OS X Lion has 250+ new features
- Multi-Touch Gestures - fully baked into Mac OS X Lion
- Mac App Store is now the #1 channel for buying software, ahead of Best Buy, Walmart, and Office Depot
- Mac App Store - now with delta upgrades for faster app updates
- More than 3,000 new APIs in Mac OS X Lion
- Mac OS X Lion - only available in the Mac App Store, no more discs. Available in July; upgrade price $29.99.
iOS 5
- 200 million iOS devices sold, making Apple's iOS the #1 mobile operating system in the world
- Apple's hugely popular iPad has sold over 25 million units, putting it far ahead of rival tablets
- Apple is the #1 music retailer in the world, with 15 billion songs sold from the iTunes Store
- 130 million books have been downloaded from iBookstore; all major publishers on board
- 14 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store in less than 3 years
- There are now 425,000 apps in the App Store, with over 90,000 just for the iPad
- There are now more than 225 million credit card accounts listed with iTunes
